General Protective Services provides ongoing services to families who, for many reasons, may need assistance in providing a safe, nurturing, and/or stable setting for their children. Often issues such as access to medical care, adequate child care or supervision, drug and alcohol addiction, mental health needs, education, and housing, are reasons the Agency may work with the family and assist parents in connecting with community resources.
If the child cannot be maintained safely in the home, then a plan is developed for that child which may include safety planning with family resources or placement in foster care.
In addition to assessing the risk of child abuse/neglect, ensuring child safety, and providing the same social services support as the GPS (0 to 5 years old) division, this division also counsels families experiencing parent/child conflict and those dealing with adolescent drug and alcohol use, mental health difficulties, and truancy.
Direct casework services are provided as well as referrals to Agency contracted mentoring and supportive programs and community-based treatment programs.
